Quote of the day

People say we're running out of energy. That's only true if we stick with these old 19th century technologies. We are awash in energy from sunlight.

China's Yutu Moon rover pictured from orbit by Nasa satellite

An American satellite has pictured the Chinese Yutu rover on the surface of the Moon. The 150cm-wide wheeled-vehicle appears as a single pixel in the images from the US space agency's (Nasa) Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO).

The lander that placed Yutu on the surface of Mare Imbrium (Sea of Rains) on 14 December is also visible nearby.

Both pieces of Chinese hardware are distinctively bright against the dark lunar "soil" and cast long shadows. This made them easy to identify in before-and-after images of the landing location, which can now be given very precise map coordinates.

Nasa says its LRO satellite was not in the right position to capture the landing earlier this month. Only by 25 December had the spacecraft's orbit brought it directly overhead. The published images were taken from an altitude of 150km.

Yutu ("Jade Rabbit") is China's first mission to make a soft landing at the Moon. After running down a ramp on to the lunar surface, Yutu trundled in an arc around its delivery lander. Scientists were able to check the vehicle's systems before putting the robot into hibernation for the long lunar night, which lasts two Earth weeks.

It is great to follow progress of Yutu. It has been in the headlines for its soft landing and the place where it can explore the Moon and potential valuable minerals or water

Moon is getting attention it deserves. There are so many obvious questions to answer and places to explore- Jade Rabbit is at the right place to explore interesting rocks and hopefully will continue this task after a lunar night in 2 weeks time Reply

Great boost and pride for China. It seems that the next space race will be between China and India just as it was in the sixties between US and Russia Reply

I believe that the Chang'e-3 lander and Yutu rover can provide many answers to our questions regarding the geological history of this region of the Moon and about lunar history in general Reply

China's Jade Rabbit rover is having a good start in exploring the Moon's surface as the aim is to explore the moon in search of natural resources- very important for further plans to make first settlements Reply

Thank you so much for this website, the waleth of information and your advice to lock up the Smart Meter. Great idea. I've written Edison and the CPUC that they may not trespass on my property to install the Smart Meter, that they must provide a viable alternative (which they have not done), etc. Just think of this: Joe is being charged with some crime. The prosecution introduces in court data collected by the Smart Meter as evidence against him. Joe cites his rights under 4th and 5th Amendments to block the prosecution from using that SmartMeter data. The judge refuses Joe and allows the data into evidence, saying: But Joe, you have already given up your constitutional protections from unreasonable search and seizure and self-incrimination because YOU HAVE ALLOWED the installation of the Smart Meter on your property. They are installing their Smart Meters ON OUR PRIVATE PROPERTY. We can refuse them on that basis. Reply
