China is set to become the third Earth nation to successfully land an object on the surface of the Moon later this weekend. The country’s space program is planning to launch its new “Jade Rabbit” (aka Yutu) rover on Sunday via its its Chang’e-3 lunar probe. If successful, this will be the first mission to the Moon’s surface since the Russians did it 37 years ago.

The six-wheeled rover will explore the moon’s Sea of Rainbows, when it lands on the surface — two weeks after its launch in mid December. Afterwards the rover will continue exploring the moon’s surface for resources. The Chinese agency also plans to set up an astronomical telescope and test connectivity between the earth and the moon, according to Chinese news site China.org.cn.

Meanwhile, Europe’s ESA said it plans to help track China’s probe and its Rabbit rover from the time it launches until the rover reaches the Moon’s surface. It will do this by using two antennas to find the the rover’s location with “extreme accuracy.”

Because of its proximity to Earth, the Moon has been seen as the most obvious natural expansion after Earth. Reply

It would make space exploration much easer if resources are used as found in space. Water is important, it can be used to obtain fuel Reply

More wide moon explorations-with many countries involved- is good step towards Moon colonization. Could this be happening in near future: interconnected biodomes, hovercrafts cruising the pockmarked surface, and ships darting to Earth and back again....

The moon has more exploitable mineral resources than the earth. On earth we can only mine a thin slice of the crust due but on the moon this is much less of a problem.

Mining on earth is destructive to our ecosystem,
this is not a factor on the moon. Reply

As technology has advanced, and concerns about the future of humanity on Earth have increased, the argument that space colonization is an achievable and worthwhile goal has gained momentum Reply

We should follow closely what is this new “Jade Rabbit” rover doing after the launch via Chang’e-3 lunar probe

Interestingly, this comes just over a decade after China first sent an astronaut into space. Reply
