Earth will be habitable longer than we thought

Using a 3D computer model, scientists from the University of Colorado looked at a variety of factors that would affect Earth’s habitability, including its future atmosphere, oceans, and land (previous models only considered temperature). Over time, the sun will radiate more heat into space, meaning that the Earth will eventually become too hot for liquid water.

The scientists simulated this with their model, taking all three of these factors into place, and calculated a new number. They determined that we won’t have to leave the planet for another 1 to 2 billion years.

This doesn’t change the fact that we will have to leave the planet someday, nor does this number consider the increase in global warming that is also turning up the temperature on Earth. However, scientists believe that the sun’s increased radiation is a more important factor here, so that’s what they focused on.

They estimate that the sun’s heat will increase about 1 percent every 110 million years. This also takes into account that the Earth is not sitting on the very edge of its habitable zone.

This time scales are difficult to comprehend from the perspective of a duration of an average human life. But we should have a good sense for he future of our civilisation that could extend beyond Earth

Well, many things could happen before Earth starts to melt. We could run out of resources long before then. We need to be looking for options now, while we still have time. Reply

It was recently reported that Earth-sized planets can support life at least ten times farther away from stars than previously thought- moving to one of those would be an option

Yes, but in this case we would need to live under the surface. This new estimate differs from the traditional “habitable zone” or “Goldilocks zone” by taking into consideration life living deep below the ground . Reply

Yes, it is reasonable to assume that going below the surface can protect you from a whole host of unpleasant conditions on the surface of many planets. So the subsurface habitable zone may turn out to be very important. Reply

It could even turn out that Earth is unusual in having life on the surface. Reply

Perhaps a recent report that on Mars there is water right now should encourage us to look for life there first. Finding further evidence that there is water on Mars would be an enormous boost for exploration and colonisation. Everyone believes that water was there once upon a time but finding it now would be a great resource - we have to wait and see

For many finding water also supports the possibility that life existed on Mars or if they find some now- that it actually supports it now. Exciting Reply
