A lack of sleep, already considered a public health epidemic, can also lead to errors in memory, finds a new study. The study, published online in the journal Psychological Science, found that participants deprived of a night’s sleep were more likely to flub the details of a simulated burglary they were shown in a series of images.

Distorted memory can have serious consequences in areas such as criminal justice, where eyewitness misidentifications are thought to be the leading cause of wrongful convictions in the United States. “We found memory distortion is greater after sleep deprivation,” said Kimberly Fenn, MSU associate professor of psychology and co-investigator on the study. “And people are getting less sleep each night than they ever have.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention calls insufficient sleep an epidemic and said it’s linked to vehicle crashes, industrial disasters and chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. The researchers conducted experiments at MSU and UC-Irvine to gauge the effect of insufficient sleep on memory. The results: Participants who were kept awake for 24 hours, and even those who got five or fewer hours of sleep, were more likely to mix up event details than participants who were well rested.

There are several lines of evidence that sleep and memory are linked and this study illustrates this link further. Sleep is essential and affects health in a big way including other vital brain functions such as learning

Yes, there are many data about harm from short sleep. Results suggest sleeping six hours or less per night increases the risk for major depression. Reply

I found that people with insomnia are four times as likely to suffer from depression than people who sleep well. This problem becomes even bigger. Exhaustion due to poor sleep is linked to motor vehicle crashes, industrial disasters, and medical and other occupational errors with an enormous costs in lost productivity. Tackling this is important! Reply

We all recognise that no animal can go without sleep, just like food and water. Now we have a good framework to establish what are critical changes that happen during the sleep - link to learning and memory highlights how critical sleep is Reply

Sleep problems are becoming more common. According to The Sleep Foundation about 70% of Americans have sleep problems, and 40 % don’t get the recommended seven hours of sleep a night. They believe that in part this is due to working more at home and using that time to do work at odd hours. Reply

According to this and several previous studies sleep loss may be more serious than previously thought, causing a permanent loss of brain cells. In mice, prolonged lack of sleep led to 25% of certain brain cells dying, according to one study. If the same is true in humans, it may be futile to try to catch up on missed sleep!

The findings that the lack of sleep can " kill" brain cells, if confirmed, could be very significant warning - it is already known that the length of sleep is essential for proper brain functions Reply
