Mysterious New Gully Spotted on Mars

A new gully has appeared on a sloped crater wall on Mars. The channel, which was absent from images in November 2010 but showed up in a May 2013 photo, does not appear to have been formed by water. Exactly what caused this Red Planet rivulet remains a mystery. The gully seems to have poured out from an existing channel in a crater in Mars’ Terra Sirenum region.

The leading hypothesis on how the gully formed is that debris flowed downslope from an alcove and eroded a new channel. Though it looks water-carved, the gully is much more likely to have been formed when carbon dioxide frost accumulated on the slope and grew heavy enough to avalanche down and drag material down with it.

More we observe Mars, more unexpected findings turn up. And there are ambitions to send people to Mars in 10- 20 years! One should find out more before proceeding to man missions

Why not water? Someone just commented "Clearly there was something there, and why do they not think it was formed by liquid water? it is well known there has been liquid water on mars. Further along there is more evidence of erosion in the gully. If someone told you this was earth and was showing erosion by water you would not doubt it. What would seem more in doubt is where the liquid came from." I agree Reply

There are also opinions that this is nothing new and that this is likely to be a flow channel caused by supper salty water ice melting during summer months.
The salt allows water to flow even below freezing temps. This theory has been around a while, as have the changing channels. Reply

It could be water. River-like valleys attest to the flow of water on ancient Mars, but today the planet is dry and has an atmosphere that is too thin to support liquid water on the surface for long. However, recently some intriguing clues suggest that water may still run across the surface from time to time- something to debate? Reply

NASA scientists suggest that regions with reappearing streaks that they report here could be added to the special regions under the current definition because of their potential connection with water. Reply

Water is of great importance as a possible source of fuel. If we can make fuel in space that would mean a leap forward for all further explorations Reply

For many finding water also supports the possibility that life existed on Mars or if they find some now- that it actually supports it now Reply
