NASA plans Mars Sample-Return Mission in 2022 with modified SpaceX Dragon capsule

Scientists have blueprinted a low-cost Mars sample-return mission that would use a souped-up Dragon capsule from SpaceX and the firm's planned Falcon Heavy rocket to get to the Red Planet by the early 2020s, with an ambitious launch date for 2022.

The new study demonstrates the viability of the entry, descent and landing of the unmanned Dragon space capsule at Mars. Moreover, the spacecraft's descent technique would help set the stage for future human missions to the Red Planet, researchers said.

It was an internal study at NASA's Ames Research Center. The study group spent a couple of years reviewing the engineering problem. They concluded that a minimally modified Dragon capsule, dubbed "Red Dragon", could indeed successfully perform an all-propulsive entry, descent and landing on Mars "without violating the laws of physics," Lemke said.

The Red Dragon capsule is customized to carry the gear needed to return samples gathered on Mars, including a Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV); an Earth Return Vehicle (ERV); and hardware to transfer to the ERV a sample collected in a previously landed rover mission, such as NASA’s planned Mars 2020 rover.

Getting samples from Mars for analyses here on Earth is going to be a big step forward - so far this could be done only with asteroids that came from Mars and they could have contaminations

I thing that there are other more exiting plans for Mars missions than this sample return mission. Once people start going to Mars, we'll get far more information far faster. Reply

We have to explore Mars much more before people go there. Just recently, a mysterious rock appeared in front of the Opportunity rover- it is “like nothing we’ve ever seen before”. Experts said they were “completely confused” by both the origins and makeup of the object!

For centuries people have speculated about the possibility of life on Mars due to the planet's proximity and similarity to Earth. It is time now to find out more

Mars is getting a lot of attention. In September this year Mars is going to have many visitors: when Maven reaches Mars it will join three functioning spacecraft, two US and one European. India's Mangalyaan also will be arriving about the same time.

NASA's space explorations generated some powerful technologies now in use here on Earth and, as someone put it, " this is to remind us that it's not the destination, but the journey that renders the rewards." Reply

I love that you were &#lhs0;se8fi22” about how you posted about the meet. You gave you the spotlight (that you deserve) and you were able to make this post all about Speed Skating Son. He didn’t get lost in your story, and you didn’t get lost in his. Better, imo.And woot! You’re making a good human. Kudos. Reply
