Northern Europe hit by most bee deaths; EU study

RATE THIS! +37
Posted in Science on 9th Apr, 2014 04:10 AM by AlexMuller

A new study covering 17 EU countries says that far more honeybees are dying in the UK and other parts of northern Europe than in Mediterranean countries. The European Commission says it is Europe's most comprehensive study so far of bee colony deaths. Winter mortality was especially high for bees in Belgium (33.6%) and the UK (29%) in 2012-13.

Bumblebees and other wild bees were not studied, nor were pesticide impacts. The study, called Epilobee, described 10% as an acceptable threshold for bee colony mortality - and Greece, Italy and Spain were among the countries with rates below that threshold.

The mortality percentages are national estimates based on representative samples. All 17 countries applied the same data collection standards, the report says. The survey covered almost 32,000 bee colonies.

But there is also much concern about death rates among wild bees, which are vital pollinators too. Last year the EU introduced a ban on four chemicals called neonicotinoids which are used in pesticides.

Bees are vital for agriculture and nature. This phenomenon of decline is well noted and more studies just supporting this fact are just a first step to address the problem- the key step is to do something about it, and should follow soon

I agree. It is important to take steps towards identifying the reasons for the recent global decline of bees; this is a dangerous trend that has baffled many experts worldwide. Reply

One phenomenon in particular is very unclear. It would be important to aim for better understanding of Colony Collapse Disorder – a worldwide phenomenon in which all the worker bees in one colony spontaneously disappear.

Its main symptom is striking - the sudden, uncharacteristic disappearance of bees from the colony as if the population is collapsing. Need to know more Reply

Important- Decline of bees costs billions of dollars worldwide because of its impact on honey harvesting and on the role of the domestic bee in pollinating crops and wild plants. This should be a big motivation for an immediate action

Protection of bees is a big issue. More studies will help to find out how various factors can negatively affect them - in particular in the EU countries that are most affected Reply

The reasons for this decline are still unknown, however there are claims of a solution in the form of a concentrated organic feed supplement. BeesVita is purported to not only protect bee colonies in danger of collapsing, but actually causes them to grow and thrive. We have to see the results yet

Not sure how much we know about this product. Details of exactly what is in BeesVita or how exactly it works are unclear. It appears to be an “animal food product” that contains “known components". Reply
