Endangered animals are set to get a hefty boost in the technology department thanks to a cash injection from Google. Conservation charity WWF will receive a $5m grant as part of the search giant’s Global Impact Award scheme, allowing it to buy poacher-tracking aerial spy bots for use in Africa and Asia.
Super lightweight and hand launched; the UAVs patrol pre programmed routes, using video cameras to search for poachers and feeding data back to law enforcement agents. Shady characters can then be swiftly intercepted by the animal cops, with footage from the drones acting as evidence as well as giving away poachers’ locations.
