John Carmack who has been working closely with publisher Bethesda to launch Doom 3: BFG Edition, has been showing off a virtual reality headset behind closed doors at E3 2012.
T3 were fortunate enough to get some hands-on time with the innovative headset that has been in the works for years according to Carmack who drew comparisons with Sony’s HMZ-T1 headset which is already available to buy.
Talking about the underwhelming experience from current products like Vuzix’s immersive eyewear, Carmack let T3 try out the headset which currently uses half the display resolution of the Sony headset but aims to give gamers a sense that they are closer inside the game.
Carmack revealed that Sony had already visited the booth to check out the headset which he plans to make available for $500 so that similarly innovative minds can play around with the technology.
He also talked in detail about his thoughts about 3D and when we asked him about whether he thought 3DTVs had been rushed out to the market he commented, "I think ghosting is still a big problem. Surely that would have been a problem 10 years ago, it has been frustrating to see that is still an issue. It came out a little better than I expected. I had more fun playing the game (Doom 3: BFG Edition) in 3D than I thought I would."
As yet there is no confirmation when the development kits will be available, but when they do it could be an exciting time for gaming.
