Tesla CEO Elon Musk talked about the future of humanity in relation to the machines equipped with artificial intelligence. Musk was present there for the launch of Tesla cars in the UAE. Musk said that in the future, the biological intelligence would have to join its hands with digital intelligence.
“It’s mostly about the bandwidth, the speed of the connection between your brain and the digital version of yourself, particularly output,” he told the people.
With every tick of the clock, we are becoming more and more dependent on computers and technology. Remember, the every search queries or using Google Maps to breeze through the traffic by getting early updates. Artificial intelligence powers all of this. But there is a gap between what’s humans can do and what machines are capable of doing. Their so called brains might become more productive than ours.
“Some high bandwidth interface to the brain will be something that helps achieve a symbiosis between human and machine intelligence and maybe solves the control problem and the usefulness problem.” – he said.
Musk also expressed his views about increasing share of automation in various sectors. He thinks robot workers will become more and more skilled and efficient over the years. Things would become cheap as the production of goods and service may escalate beyond the requirement.
“I think we’ll end up doing universal basic income. It’s going to be necessary,” he suggested.
Another important issue pointed out by Musk is the psychological aspect of the jobs we do. “The much harder challenge is, how are people going to have meaning?”
People might have all the comfort in their lives. But they just can’t be on a couch all day watching TV shows and eating 3D printed food. “A lot of people derive their meaning from their employment.”
“So if there’s no need for your labor, what’s your meaning? Do you feel useless? That’s a much harder problem to deal with.”
