St. Jude research: Child cancer survivors face long-term elevated mortality risks

The study is the first to detail that the primary causes of adult death in survivors are similar to the leading causes of death in the U.S. population, including liver and kidney disease, heart disease, stroke and second cancers. However, those deaths are more likely to occur at an earlier age in cancer survivors.

Clinical trials have shown that olaparib, also known as Lynparza and manufactured by pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca, can extend advanced prostate cancer patients’ lives by "an average of six months", NHS England said.

The new funding from Blood Cancer UK will allow the UnCoVer study to be extended by finding out how the treatment of blood cancer has changed during the pandemic. It will also look at the pros and cons of different blood cancer treatments to see which of them work best in different situations.
